Soccer circles bring fun to local kids
PARKVIEW – Soccerhood helps kids ignite a passion for ball sports, being outside and having fun.
Young children took part in an afternoon of activity and fun at a soccer circle run by Soccerhood at George Hay Park on 26 February.
Soccerhood links children between the ages of three and eight with trained coaches for a fun 40-minute session where they will get to interact with other children while learning life skills, soccer skills, numeracy, balance, coordination and decision-making.
The model also allows local residents to play their part by providing employment for previously disadvantaged coaches who run the soccer circles.

Parents can book a spot for their children at a number of convenient locations across the city through the Soccerhood app. Some of the locations include James and Ethel Gray Park in Melrose, George Hay Park in Parkview, Verity Park in Parkhurst, Lonehill Park and Bryanston Park.
Coach Johann Lonji said that his love for soccer and experience working with children made him decide to get involved at Soccerhood. “I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to impact children’s lives, interact with different personalities and have fun playing and teaching the game.”

Lonji said that he has seen an improvement in children’s listening, balance, endurance and decision-making since he began coaching. “It’s also become easier to give instructions since the children are listening well.”

Six-year-old Liam Potter, who joined the George Lea Park circle said that he enjoys running around the circle and playing matches at the end of each session. “I have also learned to dribble, pass the ball and tackle,” said Liam.
