Game Set Match Tennis Academy evolves once again during the lockdown
CRAIGHALL – These include the 'tennis racket toilet paper challenge' as well as the 'Roger Federer Volley Challenge'.
Game Set Match Tennis Academy has continually adapted to the lockdown.
While it started with exercise videos on YouTube and Facebook, which were uploaded by coach Carla Farina, it has since moved to live Zoom video meetings with players, and may feature a bit of both going forward. “Coaching has been going so well and we have done so much on the Zoom meetings, I don’t know whether I am coming or going,”
Farina told Rosebank Killarney Gazette.”I found out I can record Zoom meetings so what I may do, if I get permission from parents, is upload those meetings online for people to remember and learn from.” She said she was grateful she could still be active and helpful in a coaching role even while not being able to meet her players in person.
In addition to these weekly video meetings and exercise videos, Farina has participated in physical challenges and encouraged her players to do the same. These include the ‘tennis racket toilet paper challenge’ as well as the ‘Roger Federer Volley Challenge’. In one of Farina’s exercise videos, she promotes muscle strength and good cardio exercise. “For tennis, the most important areas to focus on for strength workouts are your legs and your core,” she explained in the video while adding that a full-body workout should also be encouraged.
In one set, Farina skips for one minute, does 10 push-ups, 10 squats, five jump lunges on each side (10 altogether), a 30-second plank, 30-second side planks on each side while lifting weights in the free hand, 20 bicycle crunches and one more minute of skipping.
Farina then plays shadow swings while practicing footwork with side shuffles, before a final minute of skipping.”[This is] very very good for cardio as well. My heart rate is racing. Nice for strength, some good strength exercises in there [and it’s] good for tennis,” she concluded.
