Paddlers selected for South African Sprint Championships

CRAIGHALL PARK – Paddlers took part in races including 200m, 500m and 1 000m.

A number of local paddlers were selected for the Gauteng team to represent the province at the upcoming South African Sprint Championships.

Paddlers were selected for the Gauteng team at the provincial sprint races hosted by the Gauteng Canoe Union at the Victoria Lake Club at Germiston Lake on February 5.

The South African Sprint Championships are set to take place in Cape Town from April 23 to 25 at Lomond Dam.

Paddlers took part in races including 200m, 500m and 1 000m.

Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union said, “The event also doubled as the first 2022 Gauteng Canoe Union Schools League event and juniors are looking forward to participating in the South African Schools League Championships at the end of April.”

“A Gauteng team reflecting all ages from U8 to Great Grand Masters was identified and the paddlers are training seriously in order to challenge the other racers at the interprovincial event.” A number of successful young paddlers from Rosebank and the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club at Emmarentia Dam were selected for the team.

Among those selected included U18 Caitlyn Evans from St Stithian’s College and Criaghall Park resident Finlay Leask from De la Salle College. Luke Salmon, who also lives in the area and attends St David’s Marist Inanda, was also selected.
