Driving forces behind sport at Greenside High

GREENSIDE - Greenside High School sports committee is set for their 2016 sporting year.

Greenside High School (GHS) is ready to kick off their sporting calendar for this year.

With a variety of sports on offer such as netball, touch rugby, chess, cricket, swimming, tennis, basketball, squash, invitational golf, rugby, hockey, netball, cross country, soccer and athletics, the year promises to be an exciting one according to Mujahid Padayachy, director of sports at the school.

“All our teams excel at high levels and, with the right coaches coming in, we look forward to even better results. This year promises to be a year of talent and growth and there is a pool of untapped talent among the pupils at Greenside in the sporting sphere,” added Padayachy.

While the sporting committee is committed to the betterment of sport at the school, they are also committed to the belief that sport plays an integral part in the development of a child. “Sport is empowering as it helps with the development of confidence in a child. As they recognise their talent, they also, in turn, recognise their worth, therefore boosting their confidence,” said Bongiwe Nhleko, sports co-ordinator at the school.

Deputy principal, Gregory Gunning, highlighted that sport helps one identify their character by helping them become more disciplined and mature.

Jacob Ngwenya, sports co-ordinator of GHS said, “Most of all why sporting is so important in school is because of the sheer fact that it gives a child the opportunity to shine outside the classroom as they grow and realise their path of talent in their schooling career. Sport allows for the expansion of tertiary bursaries and opportunities for children in high school.”
