Water winnings for St John’s
HOUGHTON – St John’s College seems to have the upper hand when it comes to aquatic sports this year.
The school’s rowing teams participated in the 109th Buffalo Regatta and the Selborne Sprints which took place on the Buffalo River in East London.
School spokesperson, Cailin Wandrag, wanted to boast about the rowers’ excellent results. “Regarding the Buffalo Regatta, it was a great day of racing with some fantastic results, in particular, the first pair, Adam Wolfe and Ross Le Maitre claiming gold,” said Wandrag. “The U16 age group also claimed three golds and one silver. Matthew Chamberlin and Matthew Betty were the top contributors, being in all three of the boats that came first.”
The Selbourne Sprints, Wandrag explained, was a fast-paced regatta over a distance of 500m on the Buffalo River. “St John’s did particularly well in the second pairs event taking all the podium spots. The U16 age group claimed three golds, one silver and a bronze,” said Wandrag.
The school had some further exciting news in the water polo department as one of their Grade 11 pupils, Miguel Morais, had been selected for the South African U17B team to compete in the Confédération Africaine de Natation Amateur Youth African Water Polo Championships in Durban on 7 and 8 March.
“We wish him the best of luck,” Wandrag concluded.
