St John’s College excels in rowing

HOUGHTON - The St John’s College rowing club recently produced great results.

The St John’s College Rowing Club enjoyed success at the recent South African Schools Rowing Champs held at Roodeplaat Dam.

There was a wonderful atmosphere at the regatta and the weather was perfect. The weekend produced some excellent racing and great results for St John’s.

On of the highlights of the regatta was the winning of the pairs race by the college’s Ross le Maitre and Adam Wolfe who earned a gold medal each.

The St John’s U16 four and coxswain of Matthew Chamberlain, Matthew Betty, Justin Vermark, Chris Williams and Daniel Louw also had an excellent race and broke the existing record in a time of 6:48:99. The team of five have been selected to go on the South African Schools Rowing Union Development Tour of England at the end of April this year.

“The U14 and U16 age groups also did well,” said master in charge of rowing at St John’s, Rod MacDonald. “T they came second in the majority of the events and this bodes well for the future of the club. All medallists and crew that made their respective finals must be congratulated on a great weekend for the rowing club.”

Armin Wessels, Wolfe, Le Maitre and Bjorn Solot were invited to attend trials for the South African Junior National Rowing Team.
