MULTIMEDIA: KES fest a huge success

HOUGHTON - The King Edward VII School rugby festival has provided some great encounters, and great display of school boys rugby.

The 15th annual King Edward VII School Easter rugby festival was once again a huge success, providing entertainment and a great display of schoolboy sport.

The festival has a unique family flavour and is considered to be an annual pilgrimage for multitudes of past pupils and friends of the school.

Senior rugby and hockey teams, as well as enthusiastic primary school teams, showcased their sporting skills over a three-day period.

The festival’s chairman, Neil Darroch said, “The festival is about people of Johannesburg coming to support schools sport over Easter time and we are very happy with the numbers this year – they are up again.”

Despite the success of the festival, he admitted that there was still a lot more room for improvement.

“Every year we always look to enhance and we have a couple of things to think about for next year, but we are happy with the product we deliver,” said Darroch.

He added that he had been involved in the festival for 12 years and the standard of rugby kept on improving every year.

“We are very blessed, we have got a very passionate old boy support and very supportive parents, and without them, our festival would not be what

it is.”

A total of 40 teams participated in the festival this year and provided supporters with a feast of top-class sport.

Jeppe Boys’ rugby team finished the tournament unbeaten and were arguably the best team. The team’s head coach, Janse van der Ryst was delighted by his team’s showing over the three-day festival.

Funeka Montjane, Standard Bank’s chief executive of personal and business banking said they were happy to once again partner with the school in hosting this prestigious festival. “Standard Bank sees this festival as an opportunity to not only support and nurture the leaders of the future but also to fulfil one of our most vital philosophies – to connect with our customers,” she said.
