Sports department at St Teresa’s keeps learners active
ROSEBANK – The department has also created a fitness programme using Zoom meetings and videos for grades 00 to 3.
The sports department at St Teresa’s School has created a Physical Wellness Google Classroom for grades 4 to 12.
The department has also created a fitness programme using Zoom meetings and videos for grades 00 to 3. Computer teacher and marketing manager Lianda May said, “This is to ensure that our girls keep active during this stressful and unprecedented time as it has been proven that regular moderate-intensity exercise increases immunity [ref Dr L Pillay, Wits University], relieves stress and keeps us healthy.”
She added that the high school in Rosebank and senior primary school girls in Craighall Park have participated in numerous challenges including juggling, netball, family, reaction and acro-sport. The most recent addition is an intergrade challenge with the Grade 6s and Grade 8s assuming the lead.
“The juggling challenge was sent out to all Catholic schools by St Catherine’s School in Germiston. Initially a soccer challenge, we adapted it to include all ball skills due to our lack of soccer-crazy boys and limited soccer experience at school. “Our girls submitted videos of themselves juggling a ball with a piece of equipment, or just their hands, and the Sports Council edited the videos received to make it seem as if the girls were passing the ball to each other in a virtual sporting game.”
For the netball challenge, May said coach Brittany Hewitt had fun with the second team netball girls, creating an entertaining video of the girls passing and shooting a toilet roll. The family challenge encouraged the girls to get their families involved in an optional family walk/run/cycle over the weekend.
For the reaction challenge, the girls were asked to test their reaction speed and coordination in one swift movement with any ball. Despite the challenging task, the girls completed it with precision and determination. May said the junior primary girls have been keeping active with live physical education lessons on Zoom, and also participated in the juggling challenge and an alphabet name challenge. The focus for them had been to continue developing their gross motor coordination and overall body conditioning through gymnastic movements, moving to music and ball time fun.
“This lockdown period has shown our girls that our homes have a bountiful resource of equipment for them to use to keep active and have fun. All our girls have been asked to complete an activity tracker and their efforts will be recognised on their return to school.”
