Ster-Kinekor, in partnership with Utkarsh Projects, announced it would host the first Indian International Film Festival of South Africa.
The festival will be presented from 17 January until 23 January.
According to marketing executive of Ster-Kinekor Theatres, Doug Place, the festival will feature a variety of titles, languages and genres from the booming Indian film industry.
“We are delighted to be in partnership with Utkarsh Projects to bring this innovative festival to our local audiences for the first time,” he said at a press conference in Rosebank.
“This genre of cinema is an important focus for us and it is pleasing that we are now able to offer Bollywood, Tamil and other Indian-language films at more of our cinemas.
“This is as a direct result of the completion of the digital conversion across all our sites that enable us to access more prints and screen these in more of our cinemas, thus reaching a wider consumer base.”
According to Prasad Khatu, one of the two film coordinators for the festival, the festival is not aimed at just attracting an Indian audience but rather promoting an opportunity for people from other cultures to connect to the Indian culture.
He said, “The film festival will not only promote Indian cultures but it will also showcase the high level of artistry from India.”
Khatu explained that many of the titles to be screened would not be released in South Africa and that this would be an opportunity for people who love the Indian film industry to take advantage of the screenings.
“However, we do hope that the festival will attract everyone because I feel that any person who enjoys the cinema and film will love the films,” he added.
Rajiv Terwadkar, director of Utkarsh Projects Private Limited announced during the media conference that three local actors would be awarded scholarships, offering them an opportunity to work with some of the best directors from Bollywood.
