Helpmekaar Kollege rocks the stage with Queen-inspired musical production

Helpmekaar Kollege's learners commanded the stage with their musical production featuring iconic Queen hits, energetic performances and a message about individuality in the digital era.

Helpmekaar Kollege recently entertained audiences with its vibrant musical production, It’s a Kind of Magic, a Queen-inspired performance that highlighted courage, uniqueness and the harmonising power of music.

Inspired by Ben Elton’s We Will Rock You, the production introduces Galileo and Scaramouche as they go through a bunch of challenges in their mission to defeat Killer Queen and revive the spirit of rock n roll in a world where live music and individuality have been forbidden.

The musical takes audiences on a journey of liberation and self-exploration through memorable Queen classics, humour and energetic performances.

According to deputy principal and production organiser Linda van Niekerk, the production was mainly chosen because of its timeless music; however it’s themes also played a major role for today’s learners.

“The story encourages us to rediscover genuine human connection. It reminds us of the importance of creativity, individuality, and engaging with one another beyond our screens,” she said.

Van Niekerk added that the rehearsal process was positive as the team worked really well to put everything together.

“The most rewarding moment is always seeing all the individual elements come together into a polished final production.”

She added that the dedication shown by learners as they balanced rehearsals and their academic responsibilities was commendable.

“I am also incredibly proud of the learners’ commitment and professionalism. Many of them are simultaneously performing in productions at other theatre festivals, managing the demands of learning and performing up to three different scripts. Their dedication and ability to balance these commitments have been remarkable.”
