Goodall to deliver public lecture at Wits

BRAAMFONTEIN - World renowned chimpanzee expert and UN Messenger of Peace, Dr Jane Goodall, will deliver a public lecture at Wits University.

The topic of the lecture will be The life and times of Dr Jane Goodall – in celebration of her 80th year.

The British primatologist, ethologist and anthropologist began her extensive research into chimpanzee behaviour in Tanzania in the 1960s.

Her work fundamentally altered scientific thinking about the relationship between humans and other mammals.

Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to continue her research. The institute has become a global leader in chimpanzee conservation efforts, and has been recognised for its innovative, community-centred conservation and development programmes.

The Roots & Shoots environmental and humanitarian development programmes connect thousands of young people around the world.

Goodall’s honours include the French Legion of Honour, the Medal of Tanzania, and Japan’s Kyoto Prize.

She was appointed a UN Messenger of Peace in 2002, and was named a Dame of the British Empire in 2004.

The lecture will take place on 7 February at the Great Hall, Braamfontein East Campus, Wits University, at 5.30pm.

There will be no charge for the lecture, but attendees were invited to make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa.

The institute will sell its new, limited edition fundraising Relate bracelets at the lecture. The bracelets celebrate the birthdays of Goodall; Thabu, the institute’s youngest chimp; and Joao, the institute’s oldest chimp.
