For the love of Mozart

JOBURG - French quintet Concert Impromptu will brighten the lives of Joburgers with three impromptu concerts this week, as part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival.

The five musicians will take audiences on a cheeky magical journey of thrilling combinations and improvisations.

The quintet features Yves Charpentier on flute, Michaela Hrabankova on oboe, Jean-Christophe Murer on clarinet, Susanne Schmid on French horn, and Vincent Legoupil on French bassoon.

The concerts, to take place in Yeoville, Braamfontein and Melrose Arch were organised with the support of the African Diaspora Forum, Classic FM and Melrose Arch respectively.

This year’s festival will celebrate love’s delights and dilemmas under the theme Un’ aura amorosa (A loving breath).

Other festival highlights include chamber music concerts at Northwards House, featuring Hyeyoon Park on violin and Florian Uhlig on piano on 5 February and Peter Burns on cello and Annegret Kuttner on piano on 6 February, and the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble’s chamber orchestra concert at The Edge, St Mary’s School, Waverley on 7 February.

A newly-commissioned sound installation will bring together the talents of Waldo Alexander on violin and artist Nandipha Mntambo at Parkwood’s Goethe Institut on 7 February.

The festival’s final concert, featuring Florian Uhlig on piano and members of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, will take place at The Edge, St Mary’s School, Waverley on 9 February.
