Kenyan songstress signs locally

JOBURG - Kenyan singer and actress Habida signed an exclusive publishing deal with South African music industry heavies, Gallo Music Publishers.

The deal was met with excitement from the Nairobi-born songstress and her executive publishing team.

Gallo will now represent Habida’s catalogue, which will also be available for digital download.

Habida is no stranger to the music industry, having worked alongside renowned producer Robert Kamanzi, also known as Rkay, on her 2007 hit singles Kesho and Sunshine, a collaboration with Kenyan artist Nameless.

Sunshine won the listeners’ choice award at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards.

Following on from that success, Habida was nominated for a further three awards at the 2010 East African CHAT Awards.

She was also a nominee in the 2010 Channel O Awards, and March 2011 saw her nominated as MTV’s best new artist of the month.

Habida’s new single, I love you, caused a stir on YFM, and has been remixed by DJ Shabby.

The single features upcoming talent Jovislash and veteran Skwatta Kamp rapper Flabba.

The multi-talented artist has just wrapped up filming her first TV series, New Beginnings, in Nairobi.

“I want to accomplish big things. I want to take Africa to different heights. I want to show the world that we, too, have the ish!” said Habida.

Gallo general manager Tsholo Moraba said, “We are excited to have an artist and composer of Habida’s calibre sign with Gallo Music Publishers at this critical time in the industry. She joins the likes of Miriam Makeba, Dorothy Masuku, Tasha Baxter and Tshidi Mohulu on Gallo’s catalogue, and we believe she will… leave a lasting legacy of music for generations to come.”
