Ditch popcorn with noodlebox cinema
MABONENG PRECINCT - Ditch the de rigueur popcorn for a box of noodles at The Bioscope's noodlebox cinema night.
The monthly event gives movie lovers the chance to enjoy Asian-style noodles provided by The Blackanese restaurant, while watching some of the best Kung Fu action on the big screen.
This month, the independent cinema will screen the 2009 South Korean film The Sword with No Name.
The film tells the story of Mu Myeong, played by Cho Seung-Woo, a Joseon dynasty headhunter who meets and falls in love with Lady Ja Yeong, played by Soo-Ae, who will become the future empress Myseongseong.
Years later, Ja Yeong enters the royal palace to marry King Gojong and Mu Myeong becomes her personal body guard in an attempt to get closer to her.
The Joseon queen becomes involved in a power struggle with Russia and Japan, who are attempting to colonise Korea.
In another twist, King Gojong’s father, played by Cheon Ho-Jin, works with the foreign powers, causing Ja Yeong to stand up to him and the foreign diplomats.
The queen’s bold move prompts the king’s father to give his approval for the Japanese to assassinate the young queen and Mu Myeong must fend off these threats to protect the woman he loves.
The screening will take place on 17 April at The Bioscope, 268 Fox Street, Maboneng Precinct, at 7.30pm.
