A howling good time at Wolves
Wolves cafe has a lot to offer patrons with its cuisine, comedy nights and live bands night.
With delectable cuisine and an entertaining line-up in place, Wolves café offers customers a whole lot more than just food and drinks.
Co-owned by Shane Durrant and his wife Angie, Wolves offers Illovo residents a relaxed and laid-back environment. The café is nestled in Illovo and according to Durrant, the idea behind opening up the spot was to offer local residents a place to meet up and have a drink.
“My wife Angie and I, with our friend Greg Rom, decided back in 2010 that Illovo didn’t have anywhere for its residents to meet up, grab a drink or just relax… so we decided to open Wolves,” he said.
Durrant added that there were challenges involved in opening Wolves, such as not having previous experience in running a restaurant, and having to deal with difficult suppliers and staff.
“Despite all these challenges, we’re proud of our little hole in the wall here on Corlett Drive and what it has become for the people of Illovo,” Durrant said.
In addition to serving a variety of cuisine, the café also has live bands performing at the weekly music night ‘HOWL’, and hosts art exhibitions and comedy nights.
Durrant added that their offering of craft beer, one of the few places in Johannesburg to do so, also adds to the café’s attraction for customers.
The co-owners also have another restaurant next to Wolves, The Good Luck Club, which specialises in oriental cuisine.
Durrant is also part of the band Desmond & The Tutus while his wife runs LuckyPony, a blog that focuses on art, design and clothing, things close to her heart.
Of the future, Durrant said no solid plans have been made to open more cafés, though there have been discussions about it.
“We hope that Wolves will continue to be a homely, comfortable community centre for the people of Illovo,” he said.
