JOBURG – After a line-up of comedians nailed the topic of sex at the Lyric Theatre, Comedy Central announced a race-inspired sequel.
Comedy Central Presents Colourblind Live at the Lyric will be hosted by investigative journalist Debra Patta, and will feature a panel of top South African stand-up comedians.
Drawn from all colours of the racial spectrum, the panel will unpick the Gordian knot at the nation’s core and play the race card in unimaginable ways.
Chris Forrest, Joey Rasdien, Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake will wash South Africa’s dirty laundry out in the open, probe the sensitive underbelly of race relations, and have the audience rolling with laughter.
“Comedy has a unique ability to cut across controversial subjects such as sex and race, and [to] offer new insights while making us laugh,” said Comedy Central Africa head, Evert van der Veer.
“We have been delighted with the reception to our first sex-themed event, and look forward [to] igniting the debate about race and colour harnessing the power of comedy.”
Patta said it was “cooler to hang out with smart, funny people than boring, serious journalists”.
“I liked the idea of providing social commentary in a satirical way, and this was a great opportunity to do something different and work with seriously talented people,” she said.
Seasoned comedian and one of the show’s producers, John Vlismas, warned that the show was “strictly not for the small-minded, the DA or the EFF”.
“With sketch, stand-up and music comedy, Colourblind is the skin-tone comedy show that ranges from beige to deep purple,” said Vlismas.
“If Sex Live is anything to go by, the audience will be laughing so hard, they may have to be reclassified.”
Comedy Central Presents Colourblind Live at the Lyric will take place on 20 and 21 June at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Ormonde, Johannesburg.
Highlights from the show will be broadcast on 4 August on DsTV channel Comedy Central at 9pm.
