A world of food in Maboneng
JOBURG - JHB Culinary and Pastry School can take you from burning food to becoming a world-famous chef extraordinaire.
Based in the bustling Maboneng Precinct, the school is hoping to inspire fanatic foodies to take their passion to the next level. Founded by chef Kelvin Joel and his wife, Jarlyne, the school was first opened at Arts on Main in June 2012, but moved premises one year later to their current location on the corner of Main and Kruger streets.
After the chef’s 14 years of international experience in the culinary industry, Joel opened the school after identifying a need in the community.
“He just saw a gap in the market,” Jarlyne explained.
“And he realised that there are some students who just aren’t being trained properly.”
The school is accredited by City & Guild and can, therefore, equip students with international qualifications that will allow them to study further and work internationally.
The Joels, who have travelled extensively, were confident in their decision to open the school in the area. “When we ended up in the [Maboneng] precinct it was a big plus for us because it’s very funky, very trendy and I think that is what attracts people to the school; it’s the sense of community,” said Jarlyn.
The philosophy of the culinary school is that all lessons that are taught to the students should be based predominantly on practical work.
This means that students cook as often as possible and try their hand at all types of culinary creations.
The school also wants the public to get involved and passionate about food and so they welcome everyone to join in on the various classes held at the school’s entertainment area.
They’ve hosted cupcake making and decorating classes, seafood classes and everything in between, and they want everyone to get in on the food preparation fun.
Making the school accessible to everyone is the main aim of the game because anyone from any background can cook, bake and enjoy good food.
