Newtown joins First Thursdays
JOBURG - First Thursdays, the free, walkable cultural tour that takes place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, is set to include another Johannesburg location to the tour.
First Thursdays in Johannesburg currently take place through the galleries of Rosebank and Braamfontein, but the City’s next up-and-coming precinct wasn’t about to be left off the list.
The cultural phenomenon will now take place in Newtown, too, with Newtown Junction and its new developments as one of the cultural hubs to be explored.
The cultural tours, which take place on the first Thursday of each month, were started in Cape Town to allow the people who don’t often get the chance to experience art in the city due to busy work schedules and families to maintain afterwards.
You may be wondering what Newtown has to offer that you haven’t seen before … but with the abundance of art galleries, performance venues, retailers and restaurants that stay open longer and offer visitors an array of different cultural experiences, there’s always something new for you to see.
Taking part in the tour for the first time will be The Potato Sheds and Work Shop New Town at Newtown Junction, the Market Theatre, Market Photo Workshop and the home of South African jazz music, Bassline.
Newtown Junction will also be hosting a live music event at the amphitheatre featuring performances by vocalist Sv la Kam, Afro-soul singer Babalwa Soul and Nkosazana Kgadi, and the musical extravaganza will be hosted by Mavestar.
In addition, Ster Kinekor will be promoting their half-price movie special that will run throughout March.
With plenty to see, hear and experience and an array of restaurants to choose from – enough to suit all tastes – Newtown Junction is the only place to be on the First Thursday of this month.
The event will take place on 3 March at 5pm.
