Meet the leader of the swing movement
JOBURG - Cape Town-born Joburg resident, Michael Lesar, is bringing swing back to life through his music and events – and you don’t want to miss it!
With more than 20 years in the music industry, Lesar is able to hone in on the music he knows is perceived well by audiences around the world. “It’s something that’s close to my heart,” Lesar said.
“I’ve been playing swing for a long time at festivals around South Africa. That’s when I started to see a gap in the market for it and so I started doing these events about four years ago and from there it just grew from strength to strength.”
Organising and performing with his band, Full Swing, at Lets Swing It Family Picnic at Carfax in Newtown on 9 April, the DJ is excited about getting people all dressed up, bringing swing to families and taking the Lets Swing It events from the club scene to a more family-friendly setting.
In addition to swing, there will also be an 80s-style rockabilly stage for lovers of old school rock n roll, burlesque performers, jugglers, arts and craft, gourmet food trucks and so much more!
Talking about his international gigs, Lesar said the music has been enjoyed by the masses and the crowds have been consistent in their support, but he had to admit that Thailand’s Jungle Experience Koh Phangan was definitely the best he’s played so far.
Based on his travels to international music festivals, City Buzz was eager to know why he decided to host the family-friendly event at Carfax. “The picnic is going to be something very cool. We wanted to do something in the inner city that’s going to be very different. There’s going to be food stalls and the side street will be laid with astroturf, so it’s not going to feel like Carfax.”
