Getting cosy with Karnivool
JOHANNEBSURG – Karnivool, the Australian hard-rock band which plans to blow the roof off of the Bassline in Newtown on 23 April, were kind enough to chat to City Buzz ahead of their arrival.
Lead singer, Ian Kenny revealed that the band, which consists of himself, Drew Goddard, Jon Stockman, Mark Hosking and Steve Judd, was started in 1999.
“We were just kids at the peak of new metal! Thank God we shed that skin as we found our own thing,” Kenny said. He said their music is often inspired by art, other musicians, films, life and death and the band’s personal heroes.
“It’s the inspiration to inspire and create something entirely yours. Anything that makes you feel.”
When asked why Karnivool is now travelling to the City of Gold, Kenny simply responded with “Why not? We want to reach as many music fans as we can. We have always found something truly special with our audience and we’d like to have that in Jozi.”
The band will rock the stage at Bassline in Newtown, one of Jozi’s hottest music venues. ‘Virtually every major South African music star has performed on a Bassline stage’, claims the venue’s website.
So what can fans of Karnivool expect from their performance here?
“Blood, sweat and barefooted, low-tuned, high-strung chaos,” Kenny stated quite seriously.
Although none of the band members have visited Johannesburg before, they’re all very excited about the trip. “I’ve had friends visit and most [of them] said how good the Alpine cigarettes are. I’m going to smoke a s**t load!” Kenny laughed.
Besides their gig, Kenny revealed that the band is excited to experience the local people and music. “We would be stoked to see or be part of some African music. Oh, and we have to try this thing we hear about keeping your chocolate in a freezer? Never done that.”
