Jazz and poetry at Newtown Junction

Junction Sundaes with Poetry, Music and Art will take over Newtown Junction on 20 March … and it’s not to be missed!

Internationally-acclaimed poet and writer, Natalia Molebatsi, has joined forces with Ariel Zamonsky on double bass, Yonela Mnana on keyboard and Siphiwe Shiburi on drums for a performance that is sure to wow the crowds.

Molebatsi stated that Vanessa Perumal, founder of JT Comms, approached her to bring a poetry flavour to the mall. “I was given carte blanche for these events and am very privileged for the opportunity. The series will include poetry and song, poetry and drum circles as well as poetry and urban jazz.”

Perumal has also had the honour of performing her poetry with the likes of Maya Angelou, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Mara Louw and many more.

“Poetry and jazz are a big deal, they contribute to cultural agency, and they have a story to tell,” Molebatsi said when asked about why Junction Sundaes are taking place.

“What better way to bring this story [than] through a poet and some extraordinary jazz musicians? The two arts have been around for the longest time and it is important to keep them alive.”

Musicians Zamonsky and Shiburi have shared the stage with many of the country’s jazz greats and Mnana is one of South Africa’s rising piano stars, currently studying for his MA in Music at Wits and working on his debut album.

Junction Sundaes with Poetry, Music and Art will take place on 20 March from 2pm to 3pm at Newtown Junction.
