Voices of Joburg: Weighing in on the Pikitup strikes

JOHANNESBURG – A voice of Joburg speaks about the Pikitup strikes which have ravaged Johannesburg.

Gemma Montshusi weighs in on the Pikitup strike:

The most interesting thing that’s happened in the city, I would have to say, was the Pikitup strike. I mean, it wasn’t interesting in a positive way. It was just interesting to see the atmosphere change in just a few minutes. It goes from a normal day to really tense and you don’t know what’s happening. You don’t know if you should be scared or if you should lock your doors. You really don’t know what’s going through their [strikers’] minds. You understand their frustration, but the scariest part is that they can take it out on anyone at any time. It goes to show how people have to go to greater measures to have their voices heard. They destroyed the streets for their rights. I don’t think it’s fair that those are the measures they have to take when you think about the fact that they had to clean it up themselves.
