More music for the public by pH

JOBURG – He's killing the rap game, one hit song at a time.

He’s played an integral part in putting together all the popular songs you know and love, and this year he’s going further.

It was in 2007 that music producer pH, born Gift Nkuna, officially kicked off his career in the South African hip-hop and rap music scene – after graduating as a sound engineer from the Academy of Sound Engineering at the SABC.

Since then he’s become a heavy player in the music world, having worked on hit tracks including Tswa Daar and Yipkayay, and appearing in the television series, The Hustle. Nonetheless, he’s learned about the hardships of music in South Africa and the motivation it gives up-and-coming musicians.

“Lack of diversity in the music industry put out by radio isn’t breaking in new artists but only celebrating established acts. I love that artists want to take more control of their own careers by cutting out the middle man and major record labels,” said Nkuna.

Now he’s dropped his new single, Amazing, and it truly expresses his views on his career and what he’s doing. “It’s how I feel about the music I’m making; I feel I make the best music ever and express myself beautifully. My music is hop-hop-based, but I love to mess with other genres and sounds, for example, kwaito, R&B, reggae and dance music.”

With a new single and more in the pipeline, pH won’t stop aspiring to do better in his career and even hopes to work with some big-time international artists this year.

“[I’d like to work with] Kid Kudi, Willow Smith and Metroboomin,” he divulged.

While music is his passion and fulfils his life by doing what he loves, he admits that he may never become accustomed to life in the limelight.

He concluded that the most bizarre part of fame is “… being in the spotlight itself; that’s weird…”
