Vintage fashionistas turn City of Gold’s style upside down
JOBURG – Jozi streets had fashion police on high alert as style statements were traded.
A fraternity of fashion-forward friends decided to give Jozi residents a fashion lesson of note when they went on an epic rampage in the city centre, en route to a shoot on the set of the popular South African TV soapie, Rhythm City.
Dubbed ‘Revelation Vision’, the group of 20-somethings chose to rock their most outrageously impressive outfits as a means to revive the vintage dress trend that, according to the group, has taken a dip in popularity of late.
“Our African street fashion is inspired by African fashion icon David Tlale,” said Tshepo Masinini, clad in a conspicuous gold and black suit.
Equally onboard was Lethu Mthethwa, affectionately known as ‘Tai Moon’. “Our style is uniquely vintage with an urban twist to it,” he stated, sporting a Scottish kilt with a matching cardigan and a polo neck.
The fashion collaborators, whose distinct dress sense has caught the eye of Rhythm City’s producers, echoed the need for people to be flexible in their approach to fashion and, through an elaborate dress sense, inspire the start of an even ‘bigger movement’.
Lwazi Nkosi, looking dapper in a tweed suit, offered, “We’re trying to show people that style exists and [that] they should identify with our vintage style [in order to attain fashion appeal].”
Another member, Siyabonga Ngwenya, described his unique style as ‘new vintage’, citing, “[This kind of fashion] is something that is around but I [personally] interpret it in my own way and believe that others should do the same.”
With that, the fashionistas booked a ticket to an exciting TV shoot from where they’ll gain an even bigger audience whose tongues the young, vintage aficionados hope to set wagging.
