Volley Nchabaleng shows his percussion skills

JOBURG – Concerts SA is at it again.

In association with Concerts SA, talented Johannesburg-based percussionist Volley Nchabeleng embarked on the tour Africa, My Home.

The Africa, My Home tour saw Nchabeleng head workshops at various schools in Gaborone during the second half of January, develop and rehearse new work with local artists, and perform at selected performance venues in the capital of Botswana during the first week of February. The revered percussionist presented the outcomes of these production rehearsals at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria and was joined on stage by various collaborators.

Nchabeleng commented, “I am very excited about this last stop of my tour at the State Theatre. I am looking forward to sharing my love for percussion with audiences in Pretoria, in a similar way I did with school kids in Gaborone. There will be surprise guests on the day, and for the first time, I will feature pioneers of Sepedi music. You will hear sounds of [musical styles and instruments] marimba, mbira, makhoyane, kora etc.”

Born in Limpopo, Nchabeleng grew up in the village of Masemola and studied music at Sibikwa Arts Centre and at the University of South Africa. He has been considered one of the most multi-talented and versatile international musicians and has toured internationally since 2004, performing in Africa, Europe and Asia.

The musician’s recent tours include India, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Austria. Currently, Nchabeleng works as a freelance producer, musical creative director for theatre productions and teacher for traditional instruments, such as marimba, African drums, and soft percussions. His latest production and DVD is called Revelation Project 2 Live at Springs Theatre, where he dishes out a different view of gospel music as a whole.

Nchabeleng’s Africa, My Home Tour is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours, without whom this tour may not have been possible.
