The Market Theatre and PopArt Theatre in Johannesburg collaborate in Greek adaptations

JOBURG – The Market Theatre Lab and PopArt team up to bring audiences new theatre projects inspired by Greek classics.

The PopArt Theatre brings the unique projects of underground thespians to life in a series of specially adapted Greek classics.

As usual, the theatre is cooking up something new on their stages and this time their new project is a collaboration with The Market Theatre Lab.

The Market Theatre Lab is a division of The Market Theatre which specialises in training young aspiring actors, producers and directors to one day perform in the theatre and entertainment community.

Furthermore, the lab provides vital opportunities to the aspirants, including this one with the underground PopArt Theatre.

Having just wrapped up their adaptation of Lysistrata, theatre lovers are now talking about the first in the series of Greek classics set to take centre stage at the theatre in Maboneng.

In this classic fable, gender-based issues are explored as the women of the town stage a sex strike in order to stop a raging war between the men. The show was revamped and placed in the African context for its run at PopArt.

“Last night’s show was cooking. The incredible ensemble work of the cast is first class. Last year this group of performers blew me away when I saw them performing their piece Hani – where the entire audience was brought to their feet in a unified standing ovation. These kids are the new kids on the block,” said Toni Morkel of theatre management.

The next exciting show confirmed for the stage is The Love of The Nightingale and this will run from 13 to 16 April.

Nondumiso Lwazi Msimanga directs this adaptation of the myth of the rape of Philomela in collaboration with a cast of six-strong Market Lab ingenues that bring the myth home.

Don’t miss out on the very real and relevant Greek classic adaptations at PopArt Theatre this month.
