#ICYMI: Twitter tributes pour in after jazz sensation, Ray Phiri dies
JOHANNESBURG – Ray Phiri has died after battling lung cancer.
South African music veteran and legend, Raymond Chikapa Enock Phiri has died after battling with lung cancer.
Ray Phiri was recently admitted to Nelspruit Hospital for treatment and according to reports, he passed away in hospital at around 3.30am on Wednesday morning.
Born in 1947 in Mpumalanga, Phiri grew to be one of South Africa’s beloved musicians with a career stretching for more than three decades. He was well known for the legendary music Stimela played, with songs such as Zwakala, Whispers In The Deep, Phinda Mzala and many more.
Tributes from fans and friends from all over the world have already started pouring in the jazz giant.
