Star from Lombardy East rocks Broadway musical at Lyric Theatre
LOMBARDY EAST – A local star's credentials speak for themselves.
Rock of Ages has hit Joburg’s shores with Nompumelelo Mayiyane, an actress and singer from Lombardy East, playing her role as Justice in the Broadway musical.
The show is an insanely funny, high energy, feel-good musical stage production. It is a sing-along, dancing-in-the-aisle, party show which boasts a charming love story.
Featuring 28 nostalgic rock anthems, Rock of Ages pays homage to the big rock concerts of the 80s.

At the tender age of 13, Mayiyane was selected as one of 12 South African youths to take part in a cultural exchange with 12 promising USA stars and performed at the Freud Theatre in Los Angeles and Apollo Theatre in New York. She matriculated at the National School of the Arts and went on to acquire a BA Honours Degree in Performance at AFDA.
Mayiyane played a supporting role in the Darrell Roodt film, Little One which was featured at the 2013 Oscar Academy Awards.
She also played alongside the South African legend, Leon Schuster in his film, Mad Buddies.

Her acting credentials also reveal that she had supporting roles in TV shows such as SABC 1’s My Perfect Family, SABC 2’s Mhuvhango and SABC 3’s Erfsondes, High Rollers and Roer Jou Voete.
Onstage, Mayiyane has worked on productions including Songs from Jazz Town, Too Much Punch for Judy, Beautiful Creatures and she even toured more than nine countries with Africa Umoja.
Rock of Ages, according to Noeleen Bruton, director of marketing for Tsogo Sun, tells the story of Drew, a city boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small town girl, who have both landed up in Los Angeles to chase their dreams of making it big.
“It celebrates a time when big glamour rock bands were the epitome of decadence, superficiality, over-sized egos, never-ending guitar solos, extreme clothes and outrageous hairstyles,” said Bruton.
“Rock of Ages is an energetic tribute to classic rock which we believe Joburg audiences are going to love. It definitely will take you down memory lane with songs like We Built this City, I Wanna Rock, and Don’t Stop Believin, to mention only a few…
“It’s going to be one of the biggest year-end parties of 2017, and under the direction of Elizma Badenhorst and executive producer Jaco van Rensburg, Rock of Ages is guaranteed to blow audiences away.”
This Broadway musical is on at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre until 10 December and various corporate, hospitality and group packages are available through goldreefcity.co.za; Gold Reef City Box Office and Computicket.
