Uzalo actor says he’s very different from his on-screen character GC

JOBURG – Kaya Dladla, better known as GC from the series Uzalo, talks about his on-screen character and how they are nothing alike.

Actor Khaya Dladla said he is nothing like his famously known character GC from Uzalo, a drama series on SABC 1.

In an exclusive interview with City Buzz on 11 May at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Rosebank, Dladla described GC as a ‘ratchet’.

Dladla was one of the actors from Uzalo who visited Johannesburg as part of their media outreach programme to promote their drama. The drama is shot in KwaZulu-Natal but has a reach in various parts of South Africa including in Johannesburg.

According to Dladla, his character is not similar to him at all, adding that they have nothing in common except that he is gay in real life as well as in the story.

“I can tell you guys, GC is embarrassing,” said Dladla adding that he would lose his mind if he was like that in real life. “But I do enjoy the part, even though people don’t take me seriously wherever I go because of this role of GC.”

Dladla, who has been in the entertainment industry for about 20 years, said he was in theatre for 17 years before his role on Uzalo. The actor holds a degree in arts from the University of Zululand. He said he favours theatre above TV because theatre grooms you and even grounds you as an actor.

Dladla said he never really wanted to do TV drama but was enticed into home television sets by famous story producer, Duma Ndlovu.

“I was actually not interested in TV but producer Duma Ndlovu, recruited me and I couldn’t say no to him.

“I’ve been doing theatre for 17 years and toured the world but I’ve never seen myself as a TV actor let alone a celebrity,” he said.

Born and bred in Umlazi, Dladla said even though he is gay he is not intimidated by his personality, in fact, he enjoys being who he is and no one will ever change that. He encouraged aspiring actors and actresses to be proud and honest about who they are.

Dladla is currently busy with a theatre play written by Gibson Kente and produced by Ndlovu, and said it promises to be something that is not to be missed.
