Local muso makes waves on the music arena

DJ Miss Zamabuya lights up the dance floor.

Mixes and music mash-ups are synonymous with the modern day music arena and with the arrival of digital music, it has made it even easier for talented DJs to release mixes that are a perfect fit for different occasions.

This freedom has given rise to many DJs, including Zamabuya Ngwenya, affectionately known by her stage name DJ Miss Zamabuya. All the way from Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal, the 25-year-old now resides in Sundowner, north of Johannesburg. The talented young DJ stands out in a crowd, not because of her good looks, but because of her ability to move a crowd and entertain her audience to the fullest.

The self-taught music enthusiast said she uses her talent to touch people’s lives and simultaneously contribute to the growth of the South African music industry.

DJ Miss Zamabuya started playing on the decks last year wanting to contribute to the music industry and performing as a DJ gave her the opportunity to do so.

“This is because it’s amazing how music touches people and thus I decided to learn the skills and the ropes of being a DJ,” she said.”The reason I even got into this industry is seeing that I continually impact on people’s lives positively and that alone fulfils me and thus a choice to spin the decks.”

DJ Miss Zamabuya released her first radio mix live on Ukhozi FM last year but her first gig was in a club in Randburg. She said she even remembers the first song she played: Umbovukazi by Da Capo.

The young upcoming DJ has been featured alongside well-known names such as DJs Lulo Café, Tira and Zinhle among others who dominate the music arena.

“I would also like to make my mark as a DJ, however, my focus now is on growing my brand and to continue nurturing my talent.

“My love for playing developed pretty organically. I would love to think it was strongly influenced by my love for music – especially house music.”

DJ Miss Zamabuya is currently making her own mix and is expected to release a single soon but did not wish to divulge on that simply saying, “Just watch the space.”
