Hit or miss: looks from the 2019 Met Gala

JOBURG – Hosted under the Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, this year’s Met Gala pink carpet had a number of hits, misses and hollowing sighs which set the globe alight.

On 6 May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York opened its doors for the Met Gala, the annual invite-only fundraiser as well as the launch event for its spring exhibition.

Hosted under the Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, this year’s Met Gala pink carpet had a number of hits, misses and hollowing sighs which set the globe alight.

This year, the annual benefit event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, presented guests with an opportunity to wear their interpretations of the theme as they hit the pink carpet.

Dubbed the Queen of the Met Gala, Rihanna created the night’s biggest disappointment as she was nowhere to be seen. Her absence pushed people on social media to start circulating a fake photoshopped image.

Lady Gaga, one of the event’s co-hosts arrived in a wafting pink outfit which opened up to reveal a black gown and then cast aside in favour of a slim-fitting pink gown and finally a black lingerie and stiletto ensemble. Meanwhile, her co-hosts, Serena Williams, Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele arrived in a neon yellow gown with matching Nike sneakers, sheer black top and high-waisted trousers, and a glossy, red silk puffy shirt and bell-bottom pants individually.

Katy Perry lit up the house in a chandelier ensemble while the Kardashian-Jenner clan showed up in colourful feathery burlesque-like outfits. The showstoppers of the night were in all probability Celine Dion, Jared Leto and Billy Botter who brought the sparkle to the Gala. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Trevor Noah went against the grain in a simple black suit and white T-shirt with the words ‘This is all a formality’ printed on it.
