Actress and Rosebank resident Precious Makgaretsa shares her advice for aspiring actresses

ROSEBANK – Precious Makgaretsa said she hopes to book jobs, perform well and have fun in 2020.

Model turned actress, Rosebank resident and keen writer Precious Makgaretsa caught up with the Rosebank Killarney Gazette discussing her transition into acting.

Makgaretsa is best known for her starring role in political TV series 90 Plein Street (season 4, 5 and 6) and supporting role in feature film Catching Feelings, which currently airs on Netflix.

Her transition into acting began in 2011 and her first acting role was on drama series Tempy Pushas, where her eyes were opened to the craft of acting.

Reflecting on her enjoyment of the craft, Makgaretsa said, “I always try to look, feel and sound different. The wardrobe, makeup and hair make a big difference to me as a performer. I really enjoy building the characters I play. Every role needs to be worlds apart from the previous one. I try to stretch my creativity as much as possible.”

She said that her role on 90 Plein Street changed her life. “I didn’t think I had it in me to do it. The script was a mouthful and the production was bigger than I had imagined. Also, my rapport with everyday views that I see in shops is quite a laugh sometimes. The viewers love the character of Lerato Maduna.”

Makgaretsa said that through the craft of acting, she had learned to become more compassionate and thoughtful. “I’ve realised that taking things at face value is not always a good thing. There’s always more. There’s always ‘deeper’ – people and situations are layered and multi-dimensional.”

She advised aspiring actors to get an agent, learn the craft, work hard, take care of themselves and chase their dreams. “Sometimes you’ll learn on the job. It’s okay. Just do your best.”

Makgaretsa said she loves living in Rosebank because of its proximity to places of interest and the bell tower, which she can hear from her home at various times of the day.

Looking to the year ahead, she hopes to perform well, book jobs and have lots of fun.
