JHF kicks off first virtual tour

This is the very first tour of the year by the heritage foundation.

Johannesburg Heritage Foundation will host its first virtual tour for the year over the weekend.
On 16 January, residents are invited to join writer David Fleminger for an illustrated presentation based on his book Fair Game.

Vice-chairperson at the foundation Flo Bird said, “We will discover the hidden history of the Kruger National Park, warthogs and all. From its establishment in 1898 as the humble Sabi Reserve, through the 50-year stewardship of its most dedicated warden [a stubborn Scotsman named James Stevenson Hamilton], to its rebirth as the Kruger National Park and beyond.

“It’s an engrossing tale filled with adventure, adversity and more than a few surprises. [Spoiler alert: Paul Kruger had very little to do with it]. “So, join us for a grand historical safari as we recount the unlikely tale of an unwanted wasteland that grew into one of the greatest game reserves in the world.”

Bird added that these tours were open to all and space may be limited. There is a nominal fee of R60 for fully paid-up members of the foundation. Paid up members of Forest Town, Houghton, Kensington, Norwood, Oaklands, Parktown, Parkview and Westcliff associations also only pay R60.

Members may pay R600 upfront for 11 virtual tours (get one free). You need to register with Eira Bond at mail@joburgheritage.co.za
Non-members to pay R100 by EFT into the foundation’s account and they can pay R 1 000 upfront for 11 virtual tours (get one free).

“If you have registered and paid you will receive the link on 15 January. If you want to join, and still need to pay your membership fee, please email Eira Bond at mail@joburgheritage.co.za .
Tours begin promptly at 2.15pm, so please sign in at least five minutes before the tour starts.
