How to craft a hedgehog out of sunflower seeds

This simple and fun hedgehog craft is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers to practice fine motor skills.

As parents, we know that crafting teaches children various essential skills.

Grabbing small items strengthens the muscles that will later help preschoolers button their coats, tie their shoes, write, and do other things.

Crafts made from various small items (such as seeds or beads) are an excellent way to learn patterns and practise counting. These are the skills that students will need later in algebra! Kids can also practise their 1, 2, and 3s by counting the number of steps in the instructions or gathering the correct number of components for their chosen project.

Crafts also help children learn about shapes and colours, as well as critical thinking, resilience, and self-esteem.

Crafting teaches children about patience as well. We live in an age of instant gratification, but we also know that not everything happens instantly. When children craft, they may need to wait for things to dry or set before proceeding to the next step, or they may need to understand that a craft may require more than one session to complete.

Here’s how to create a cute hedgehog-themed craft with your little ones!

What you need

  • Clay for modelling
  • Clay tools
  • Scissors (for cutting clay pieces)
  • Some sunflower seeds
  • Some nuts
  • Craft Glue

How to make it

  1. Help your children to shape the clay into the form of a teardrop, and then have them stick sunflower seeds all over the surface.
  2. Put some nuts on top to look like eyes and a nose.
  3. Allow to air dry for the night.
