49M launches ‘Know Your Number’ campaign

Building on the momentum which has been achieved over the past four years, 49M today unveils the second leg of the campaign which calls on South Africans to “Know Your Number”.

A nation-wide research conducted by an independent market research firm on the prevalence of 49M among South Africans revealed that 73% of consumers are aware of the campaign and have been inspired to change their behaviour.

It is against this backdrop that 49M launches the Know Your Number campaign. The campaign reinforces 49M’s strategic intent to encourage South Africans to be drivers for social and behavioural change and to encourage everyone to Live Lightly.

“The campaign has come a long way since its launch over three years ago. We are pleased that consumers have been responding favourably to our call to use electricity sparingly and, as research shows, consumers have also demonstrated their commitment to the cause. As we launch the next phase of the campaign, we hope to empower consumers in a way that not only impacts pockets in terms of cost savings, but also demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability as we take energy efficiency to new heights,” said Pieter Pretorius, Eskom’s Senior Manager – Strategic Marketing Initiatives.

Pretorius said the Know Your Number campaign will enable consumers to calculate their home energy consumption using the standardized measure which will allow them to categorize their energy rating against other homes and against global benchmarks.

It will also help consumers establish whether their homes are good, average or bad performers in terms of their electricity usage as Know Your Number gives them their home Energy Rating.

“Our aim is not only to help consumers understand how much their homes are consuming but also assist them reduce their energy usage by providing the required tools and advice. We believe that once you”Know Your Number”, all complexities are removed and you are able to reduce that number by 10% annually,” concluded Pretorius.
