Reader expresses views on George Lea Park

SANDTON – A Sandton resident expresses his strong views on a controversial park in his area.

After reading numerous articles about George Lea Park, Sandton resident Karl Danhauser expressed his opinions on the controversial park.

Danhauser writes:

Driving past the area, I am compelled into showing very little sympathy for the illegal squatters living in George Lea. The park is disgusting and resembles a dump site, with filth and litter as far as the eye can see. Crime is up in the area, and one certainly dare not walk in or near the park for fear of being mugged – or worse.

But just as bad is the sympathy the vagrants living in the park are receiving [from the] Sandton Chronicle. Dishing out pity for this illegal activity is actually sending mixed messages and condoning what is going on there, rather than finding a lasting solution to clearing the park of squatters.

Indeed, since your articles began making an appearance, the park has gradually filled with more arrivals and filth.

I can well understand why people are forced into sub-standard conditions, but for them to turn an area into a breeding ground for crime, filth and anarchy is completely unacceptable to civilised norms and standards.

That is what the Sandton Chronicle should be reporting on.
