A year of firsts for the RKC Dojo in Rivonia

The RKC Dojo wishes the community a safe and restful festive season ahead as it reflects on a phenomenal year for its members.

Ryu Ken Chi Dojo (RKC Dojo) celebrates a phenomenal year of firsts.

According to the dojo’s Warren Ho, not only did RKC have its first gassuku, a training camp away from its usual training venue at the Rivonia Recreation Centre, but the Kendo Kids division developed further.

“Since travel restrictions were lifted, several RKC Dojo members were able to travel abroad and successfully grade to their shodan levels in iaido and jodo, the two other martial arts other than Kendo that is offered by our dojo.”

Some of the Kendo Kids, aimed at youngsters between the ages of six and 12, underwent a successful transition from casual clothing to formal kendo uniforms and armour (bogu).

“Our dojo [also] sent seven junior members (12-18 years old) to the South African Kendo Federations (SAKF) Junior Championships at the end of November. This would be the first time these championships will take place,” said Ho.

Warren Ho and son Nathan look forward to what the new year has in store for the dojo.

Ho added that the dojo is committed to its training and will continue to train diligently until Christmas eve (December 24).

“As a special year-end training session, members of the dojo will be performing 1 000 cuts or strikes to finish the year off strong.”

In the new year, training will resume on January 7.

New prospects for kendo, iaido and jodo are encouraged to contact the dojo now to start their 2023 year off strong.

“Finally, on behalf of all the members of the RKC Dojo, we’d like to wish all the Caxton readers a safe and restful festive period. As we say in the dojo: Please stay strong. Stay healthy. Keep training.”
