The 8th of March marked International Women’s Day – such an honourable event that The Motsepe Foundation held its annual Gender Equality, Wellness and Leadership Summit (GEWAL) at the Sandton Convention Centre.

With much turmoil happening in the world in terms of GBV and the coronavirus pandemic, the theme this year is titled, ‘Harnessing the role of women in pandemic recovery’.

The keynote address was given by the foundation’s co-founder, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe who touched on some major issues women face in South Africa as a whole.

Notable key points were investing in human capital, creating economic opportunities for all, leveraging technology, shaping new attitudes and enforcing inclusive laws, policies and regulations.

The main reason for holding the summit was born out of the belief that healthcare and wellness-related practices can support the contributions women make to society and the economy.

With a number of discussion panels on the agenda from health to youth issues, the summit highlighted many challenges women face in society today.

According to Motsepe, women face multiple health concerns in their lifetime.

“Therefore, access to healthcare that is tailored to their unique needs is crucial. It is also closely linked to understanding the various roles women play in society and how this relates to wellness.”

Focusing on holistic health, the panel discussion dissected the ever-changing health needs of women and girls. Offering critiques and interventions will help promote women’s well-being and amplify their all-embracing societal contributions.

The youth panel highlighted worldviews and priorities set by young people as the youth review the current status quo and offer alternatives for the future.

Lastly, the women in charge panel discussion celebrated the progress made by current leaders and explore their agendas for increasing women’s leadership and overall economic participation.

The next GEWAL webinar will address issues of unpaid care work and the social economy in South Africa.
