Water pipe bursts a concern
SANDTON – It was reported that four major pipe burst had occurred in front of the Moor Park residential complex over the past six years.
Residents of Moor Park residential complex have expressed safety concerns and service delivery frustrations.
Resident Christopher Glisson claimed that in the past six years they have experienced four major pipe bursts in front of the complex.
All of the residents who call the 84-unit complex home can only access the residence from Katherine Street, so when there is a pipe burst, access is completely restricted or compromised to some degree.
“The first digging for repairs was done in 2015 leaving a huge crater at the main entrance. Then in 2019, another burst [occurred], this time resulting in the pavement having to be dug up. The paving blocks removed were just left on the pavement, resulting in pedestrians having to step into the road if two people were passing in opposite directions,” he said.
A third burst occurred earlier this year, close to where the pipe had burst in 2015, leaving a large hole in the left lane of the road. “Recent rains just washed all the sand out, pouring mud and refuse into the complex garage and lift shafts,” said Glisson.
He added that a fourth burst occurred last month, leaving the residential complex with no water for two days because the burst occurred on a Friday night. When the pipe was repaired, half of the left lane on Katherine Street was closed off to traffic.
Johannesburg Water spokesperson Isaac Dhludhlu said the aging infrastructure in the city was the main reason why the majority of water pipes were bursting. He added that it was the responsibility of Johannesburg Roads Agency to reinstate the roads and pavements.
The agency was contacted for an estimated timeline for the reinstatement in the Moor Park issue but no response was made available at the time of publication.
Glisson and the other residents called on the City to come up with long-term solutions or else the problems would continue.
