Festival celebrates local art

Members of the community united for a celebration of art at this year’s Yards of Arts Festival, hosted by Sandton Rotary Club, on November 12.

The three-day event at the Victoria Yards in Lorentzville saw just 100 people support the work of 20 local artists.

Not only did the exhibition raise funds for the local Rotary Club but it also benefitted the arts community who had been at a shortfall during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“The Sandton Rotary Club in service of the communities around them hosts fundraising events that, amongst other things benefit communities, children and families affected by poverty,” said the club’s Val Thompson.

Art lovers were also treated to some poetry, the winners of the two age group categories of the Sandton Rotary Club Poetry Competition. The winners recited their winning pieces and received their prizes at the festival.

Thompson added that everyone was able to get in on the fun of the festival; attendees were given the opportunity to test their talent by participating in a still life drawing competition.

“Festival organisers produced unique deck chair frames, specially made from rosewood, [and the] artists were invited to paint the canvas seats – each chair is an original work of art.”

These chairs were sold at a silent auction at the festival.
