Imbumba Foundation honours International Woman’s Day with artist collaboration
SANDOWN — International artist and humanitarian, Sarah Güsten-Marr, collaborates with the Imbumba Foundation in support of young girls facing various social challenges such as period poverty and gender-based violence
The Imbumba Foundation based in Sandton announced its partnership with Liberian artist Sarah Güsten-Marr for their International Woman’s Day celebration on March 8.
Humanitarian and contemporary artist Güsten-Marr has always been at the forefront of social issues. Her artworks have been known to touch the hearts of individuals from all walks of life. Her work sheds light on social challenges that affect various parts of the world that she has visited.
The foundation strives to empower girls who are greatly affected by period poverty, bullying and gender-based violence, through discussions, donations and education.
Like many individuals that advocate for peace, equality and justice, Güsten-Marr’s first inspiration was attending a rally in the fight for equality during the apartheid regime. This was an interest that was engraved into her identity by her German mother who adopted her when she was a young girl.
“When I was around 12, I remember my mother collecting me from school one day and telling me that what we needed to do that day was more important than going to school,” said Güsten-Marr.
“My mother took me to participate in a rally being held that day in Washington D.C. to protest to free Nelson Mandela. I remember my mother telling me that as long as there were places that she and I, mother and daughter, could not walk in the street together holding hands or sitting next to each other on a bench in the park, we would need to stand up and make our voices heard.”
The artist also plans to release a song Letter2Mandela which she has been working on with the foundation. She further plans to auction one of her prized paintings at the International Women’s Day celebration. All proceeds will be donated to the foundation.
“The opportunity to help celebrate the foundation’s achievement seemed like it was meant for me to bring my voice and my talents to support this cause.”
