Give hope one bag at a time
GALLO MANOR – While the Bag Angels only do this part-time, they have managed to donate just over 2 500 beautiful bag to shelters across Johannesburg and Pretoria thus far.
Gallo Manor resident Hetty Johnson and her Bag Angels would like to call on the community for donations as it lends a helping hand to women in need.
The Bag Angels fill second-hand handbags with goodies and toiletries to donate to registered women’s shelters.
According to Johnson, the idea came from a group of women in George who were doing a similar outreach programme in their community.
“I was so inspired by their willingness to help other women that I thought of all my wonderful girlfriends who may feel like giving a bit back to society. I surrounded myself with a team of inspired and enthusiastic friends, who asked their girlfriends, sisters and mothers to help out.”
She added that people from all walks of life came together, working towards the ultimate goal of helping women in need.
While the Bag Angels only do this part-time, they have managed to donate just over 2 500 beautiful bags to shelters across Johannesburg and Pretoria thus far.
“The women and young women we reach all come from the most awful situations. The abuse most of them have experienced is horrendous, but they survive through the wonderful support and help from these shelters and the people who work in them.”
Anyone interested in donating to the Bag Angels, please note that they do not deal in cash, only goods.
“We believe we are conduits, receiving goods and passing these on, to women in need,” said Johnson.
The Bag Angels are currently in need of:
- Handbags (second hand, not broken)
- Winter scarf or gloves
- Bibles
- Notepads and pens
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Hand creams and body lotions
- Roll-on deodorant
- Small packet of tissues
- A treat to eat or keep
- A letter of hope and encouragement
- Hand sanitiser
Donations can be dropped off at the Peter Wabbit Nursery School, 52 Satara Avenue in Gallo Manor during office hours.
