Bryan Schimmel: More than a handful premiers at Theatre on the Square

Award-winning music director Bryan Schimmel has been at the musical helm of blockbuster musical theatre hits including Jersey Boys, We will rock you, Chicago, Rent, Annie and The Rocky Horror Show.

Following rave reviews and a successful season in the Western Cape, Bryan Schimmel: More than a handful will have its Johannesburg premiere at Theatre on the Square from March 31 to April 16.

Award-winning music director Bryan Schimmel has been at the musical helm of blockbuster musical theatre hits including Jersey Boys, We will rock you, Chicago, Rent, Annie and The Rocky Horror Show. He is a top musical arranger in the country, having orchestrated music for major high-profile events and numerous A-list artists.

Schimmel is best known for co-creating and performing the original A handful of keys in which he thrilled audiences with a dazzling display of pianistic virtuosity and his infectious dry sense of humour.

Though this production is not a sequel to A handful of keys, it reunites Schimmel with the production’s original director Alan Swerdlow and designer Denis Hutchinson, who created the setting and lighting.

Theatre owner Daphne Kuhn said, “More than 25 years and a pandemic later, in his first-ever solo performance, Bryan peels back the curtain to reveal the man behind the maestro. Everyone has a story of their own. This is Bryan’s. A unique mix of music, masterful storytelling, quirky comedy and an inspirational rise-and-fall-and-rise-again account of triumph over adversity. It is an engaging and relatable musical memoir that audiences will not want to miss.”

Robyn Cohen wrote on thecaperobyn.co.za, “The show flows between words, anecdotes, narration confession, reflections and moments of showpersonship.”

On theatrescenecpt.co.za Barbara Loots said, “He has a unique talent to sweep his audience up in song and rhythm and make you forget about your troubles. Or perhaps, it is Schimmel showing us that it is okay to seek refuge in the things that inspire us.”

The production is produced by VR Theatrical in association with Lorri Strauss and is presented by Daphne Kuhn at Theatre on the Square.

Bookings can be made at Computicket on www.computicket.com or by calling the theatre on 083 377 4969 or 011 883 8606. The normal ticket price is R180 but special discounts are available for students, seniors and group bookings.
