Bryanston bridge claims yet another car
The bridge is synonymous with flash flooding as it is a low-lying bridge, making it near impossible to cross safely during heavy rainfall.
The infamous low-laying bridge on Belgrave Street in Bryanston recently claimed yet another vehicle.
Residents in Bryanston and River Club found a silver BMW alongside the bridge, in the Braamfontein Spruit, on the afternoon of April 9.
It had been almost three years since a vehicle found itself in the spruit, previously reported online in an article titled Belgrave bridge claims another vehicle [November 16, 2019].
According to a resident on social media, the driver was allegedly impatient and could not wait long enough for the oncoming vehicle to clearly cross the one-lane bridge.
“The driver tried to overtake on the approach and lost control. [The car] ramped up the side of the bank and in the water.”
Previously, the Bryanston East Community Forum noted that this was not an uncommon occurrence in the area as motorists are impatient, thinking that they can skip the queue and cross the bridge.
The JRA said in 2020 that it was looking into improving traffic flow on the bridge.
In the meantime, Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford urged residents and motorists to approach and cross the low-lying bridge to exercise caution.
“During tremendous rainfall, people need to be very careful on the bridge,” said the councillor.

“It is a one-lane bridge, please be careful, be a little more cautious and patient because the bridge is a known problem and things can go horribly wrong quite quickly,” said Shackleford.
