Sandton Junior Nursery School host police and firefighters for a fun show-and-tell
Sandton Junior Nursery School recently enjoyed a fun-filled with a visit from law enforcement and emergency services.
Sandton has a new police and fire squad in town.
The Sandton Junior Nursery School recently received a visit from officers of JMPD and the City of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Fire Department for a fun educational day.
According to the head of the nursery school Irma Day, the learners were taught about firefighters, the importance of having protective gear and why a firefighter’s face needed to be covered while fighting a fire.

The learners were also taught what to do in case of a fire or emergency.
“We had so much fun, and the police and firefighters were extremely kind and patient with the young ones,” said Day.
The officers spoke to the learners about ‘stranger danger and the importance of not talking to strangers or accepting gifts. The learners were told to scream as loud as they could if they thought that they were in danger.
“Between the screaming matches and the dressing up in uniforms, it was a wild and crazy day. They [the officers and firefighters] really did go out of their way to ensure that the kids are fully informed about safety, fire safety and ‘stranger danger’,” said Day.
The visit was in line with the school’s curriculum and theme People who help us in our community.
“We focus on practical learning and ensuring that fun is involved when the kids are at school. It’s imperative that they learn while having fun and, boy, were they exhausted afterwards.”

She added that the highlight of the day was when each of the learners had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a police car with the sirens off.
“We’d like to thank officer VJ Ebrahim from the JMPD Community Outreach and Chris Viviers from COJ EMS Public Information, Education and Relations for being so patient and kind to the kids, and of course for handing out the kids’ personalised police badge at the end of the day.”
