ATM crime alert in Sandton

New warnings for locals emerge as ATM thieves target Sandton residents.

Sandton CPF issued an alert across its community group chats about the ATM scams reported in the Sandton area recently by the community members.

According to the statement, the victims are using ATMs when they are approached and interrupted by individuals who then steal the victim’s bank cards and, within minutes, they make withdrawals at other ATMs.

They believe that the suspects may also use card-skimming devices to read your card details.

The Sandton CPF share safety tips that the public can use:

  • Never share your bank card and PIN with anyone.
  • Be aware that suspects do not necessarily loiter around ATMs. They can drive in or walk over while you are at the ATM.
  • Check the ATM for any false panels and other components before using the machine.
  • Do not let anyone distract you or interfere with your transaction at an ATM.
  • Do not tap on the tap points if people are urging you to.
  • Do not swipe your card on any other devices presented by anyone.
  • If people do insist on being around you or interfering, remove your card immediately and walk away.
  • If your card is taken, call your bank immediately to block the card. Do not wait. Suspects withdraw monies from accounts within minutes. Block your cards immediately to prevent the loss of funds.
