Stokvel Voices explores the untapped potential of stokvels for future generations

Discover the transformative power of stokvels in South Africa through Busi Skenjana's inaugural book, Stokvel Voices, as she brings to light the economic significance and rich history of these savings co-operatives.

A 68-year-old passionate advocate for community empowerment and financial literacy, and the founder of Stokvel Academy, Busi Skenjana, has officially launched her very first book, Stokvel Voices.

Stokvel Voices ignites conversations about the economic potential and historical significance of stokvels – the South African savings co-operatives that have served as a financial lifeline for many communities.

After being actively involved in the stockvel movement for over forty years, Skenjana recognises the importance of documenting the wealth of experiences and insights from those who participate in these unique collective savings systems.

“The inspiration to write this book came from my personal journey within the stokvel movement,” Skenjana said. “I realised that there was a critical need to archive our knowledge and share the values, history, and evolution of stokvels for future generations.

“I aim to emphasise that stockvels are not just social constructs but also vital economic institutions that contribute to financial development.”

The book’s central themes focus on the lessons learned throughout the history of stokvels, their evolution, and the opportunities they present in today’s economy. Skenjana believes it is essential to bring younger generations into the fold to ensure that the rich culture of stockvels continues in the future.

While reflecting on the challenges of writing, Skenjana said: “Time was a significant challenge. It was crucial for me to gather quality information that would truly reflect the voices and experiences of individuals involved in stokvels. I wanted to ensure the stories shared were impactful, not just in quantity but in quality.

“Therefore, this book is not only for stokvel members; it is an essential read for anyone interested in the future of community entrepreneurship.”

Skenjana added that stockvels are not merely about saving; they are about creating a future filled with opportunity, empowerment, and sustainable wealth for our communities.

“With this book, I aim to ignite a new conversation on how we can transform stockvel culture into a powerful catalyst for economic growth, entrepreneurship, and generational prosperity. Stokvel Voices is a call to action for every South African to acknowledge the untapped potential within their communities,” she said.

Adding to the discourse, Makwe Masilela, founder and chief investment officer of Makwe Financial Services, emphasised the untapped potential of stokvels in the financial sector. “There is still a lack of understanding of the significance of stokvels within the financial ecosystem. While we may think we understand, many from the financial sector do not. It’s critical to include stockvels in financial conversations.”

He further highlighted the need for financial institutions to actively engage with stokvels, which are a vital part of the economy, urging industry leaders to develop tailored products that cater to this unique market.
