Tertiary is about more than grades
From tennis Fridays to leading with empathy, one student’s approach to thriving on campus.
Kayla Jameson, a final-year IIE Bachelor of Commerce student and chairperson of the Social Committee at The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton campus, is redefining what student leadership looks like by leading with authenticity, collaboration, and care.
Reflecting on her journey, Jameson said leadership for her was never about titles or recognition, but about shared experiences and growth.

“When I think about what shaped my leadership journey, it wasn’t the titles or the recognition. It was being in the moment with my social committee. I never wanted to be the kind of leader who just tells others what to do. I wanted to contribute to the team’s growth while developing and growing as a leader with the team.”
She described facing challenges together as a turning point that strengthened trust and connection.
“We faced challenges together as a team, and that built a sense of connection that I’ll always carry with me.” Being placed in situations where she had to step up helped her develop confidence and self-belief. “That experience gave me the courage to trust myself more.

“Balancing academics, leadership, and a social life takes practice and a lot of self-awareness. I have learned to be intentional with my time and to focus on what truly adds meaning to my life.”
For Jameson, downtime is just as important as discipline. Tennis Fridays with friends offer space to recharge, while moments of reflection at home help her stay grounded and focused.
Her advice to students is simple but thoughtful.
“Get involved but stay true to yourself. Say yes to new experiences that help you grow, surround yourself with people who inspire you, and make time to rest. Tertiary is not only about grades, but it’s about discovering what kind of person you want to be.”
