Nicole Mason, a senior lecturer at The Vega School in Sandton, has launched her debut children’s book, The Near Extinction of Oliver Hook.

“My passion for writing began with reading bedtime stories to my children — a family tradition that continued for many years,” said Mason. “I enjoy creating exciting and engaging stories that spark young imaginations.”

The story follows Oliver Hook, a young boy navigating life after the loss of his mother and moving in with his estranged father, a genetic scientist. When Oliver discovers his father’s extraordinary work involving extinct species, he finds himself drawn into a world filled with mystery, unusual characters and unexpected danger.

The Near Extinction of Oliver Hook is the first of a two-part series, with the second book set to launch towards the end of the year. “Book one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and book two will be the resolution of the story,” said Mason.

With its blend of mystery, adventure, science and imagination, the book aims to encourage young readers to explore stories that challenge their imaginations.

At Vega, students learn from lecturers who are active in the industry. Mason’s journey as an author reflects this approach, allowing students to see creativity and professional practice brought to life beyond the lecture room.
