Henning Bouwer takes silver at Hubert van der Spuy competition
After finishing as second runner-up last year, flautist Henning Bouwer has returned to the podium with the Betsie Clüver Memorial Second Prize and dreams of performing around the world.
Flautist Henning Bouwer (13) earned second prize at the prestigious Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, taking home the Betsie Clüver Memorial Second Prize, a silver medal and R15 000 after placing among eight finalists selected from 47 participants.
Although Bouwer had his sights set on the first prize, the recognition was a meaningful achievement in his musical journey.

“I really had my eye on the first prize, especially as I was second runner-up last year, but I was honoured to be named first runner-up of this prestigious competition. Just participating in this competition is such an honour and a wonderful experience,” he said.

His repertoire included Suite in A Lento by GP Telemann, La Flute de Pan in F by J Mouquet, Nampti’s Dance in F by F Prinsloo, Concerto in D by Mozart and Sonate in C by G Donizetti.
He said he enjoys the variety of challenges presented by the pieces, explaining that each requires a unique interpretation while still allowing him to bring his own musical personality to the performance.
Performing in front of people and sending a message through notes rather than words is what he enjoys most about playing the instrument.

Preparing for the national competition required dedication, with Bouwer committing to focused daily practice sessions and listening to interpretations of his pieces by other musicians. However, performing under pressure presented its own challenges. “Nerves sometimes impact on one’s breathing, which could make it difficult to produce a good sound,” he said.
He added that being selected as one of the eight finalists was a particularly emotional moment. “I felt extremely relieved, especially as I had a difficult round the previous day, and excited to get the opportunity to perform again.
“Winning the silver medal and R15 000 meant that my musicality was recognised and that I succeeded to show and pass on to others the joy of playing the flute. I am planning to invest the winnings in shares.”
Looking ahead, Bouwer hopes to participate in international competitions and travel the world performing, taking his love for the flute to audiences beyond South Africa.
